1. WHAT ASCORBIC ACID TABLETS ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR


Ascorbic Acid Tablets contain ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is a form ofvitamin C. It is used as a pupplement for the prevention and treatment of scurvy.


2. BEFORE YOU USE ASCORBIC ACID TABLETS

[Take special care with Ascorbic Acid Tablets

•    An increased intake of ascorbic acid over a long period of time may lead to an increase in the clearance of ascorbic acid from the kidneys. If these tablets are withdrawn rapidly, it may result in a vitamin C deficiency.

L Large doses of ascorbic acid can lead to the

I formation of kidney stones.

L These tablets should be given with care to patients who have high levels of oxalic acid in their urine (hyperoxaluria)

|* These tablets may interfere with the Clinistix test (a test for detecting glucose in the urine)

|* Excessive chewing of these tablets may cause the enamel on your teeth to breakdown and lead to an increase of dental caries (fillings)


Using other medicines

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including those bought without a prescription.

This is particularly important if you are taking any of the following:

•    Aluminimum containing antacids used to treat indigestion and heartburn

•    Barbiturates such as phenobarbital or primidone used to treat epilepsy

•    Cellulose sodium phosphate used to treat excessive calcium in the blood

•    Deferioxamine used to remove excess iron from the body

•    Disulfiram used to treat alcoholism

•    Mexiletine used to treat heart problems

•    Salicylates e.g. aspirin used for aches and pains

Ifyou need to have a blood or urine test you should tell the doctor or nurse you are taking these tablets as they may interfere with the results.

Pregnancy and breast feeding

Doses greater than 1g should not be taken during pregnancy as it is not known how large doses of ascorbic acid affect the developing baby. Therefore if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or become pregnant, you should talk to your doctor before taking these tablets.

If you want to breastfeed your baby you should talk to your doctor first before taking these tablets.

Driving and using machines

This medicine should not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you think you are affected you should not drive or operate machinery until you feel better.

Important information about one ofthe ingredients in these tablets

These tablets contain lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, you should talk to your doctor before taking these tablets.


3. HOWTOTAKE ASCORBIC ACIDTABLETS


Always take Ascorbic Acid Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. Ifyou are not sure you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking.

Chew the tablets carefully before swallowing


Adults, the elderly and children over 6 years of pge:

500mg, 200mg and 100mg tablets:

treatment ofscurvy: not less than 250mg daily, in divided doses

prevention of scurvy: The 500mg, 200mg and 100mg tablets are not suitable for prevention of bcurvy.

50mg tablets:

Treatmentofscurvy: 25 75 mgdaily.

Prevention of scurvy: Not less than 250mg daily in plivided doses

Children under6years ofage:

Ascorbic Acid Tablets are not suitable for use in Children under 6 years of age.

Ilfyou take too many tablets

.If you (or someone else) swallow a lot of tablets at the same time, or you think a child may have swallowed any, contact your nearest hospital causality department or tell your doctor


Medicines should not be disposed ofvia wastewater of household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of unwanted medicines no longer required. These measures will help protect the environment.


6. OTHER INFORMATION



What Ascorbic Acid Tablets contain _ _

Ascorbic Acid Tablets contain ascorbic acid as follows:

500mg tablets contain 500mg of ascorbic acid per tablet.

200mg tablets contain 200mg of ascorbic acid per tablet.

100mg tablets contain 100mg ofascorbic acid per tablet.

50mg tablets contain 50mg ofascorbic acid per tablet.


|lf you forget to take a dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you Iremember and then take the next dose at the correct time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

l|fyou stop taking these tablets

|lf you have been taking Ascorbic Acid Tablets for a long time, you may develop a deficiency if you stop |taking them. You should talk to your doctor before you stop taking them.


The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, thixin R, sodium starch glycollate and silica colloidal anhydrous.

50mg Tablets are white to off-white convex tablets engraved with a logo on one side and A009 on the other side.


4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS


.Like all medicines, Ascorbic Acid tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:


100mg Tablets are white to off-white convex tablets engraved with logo on one side and AOIO on the other side.

200mg Tablets are white to off-white convex tablets engraved with logo on one side and AOII on the other side.

500mg Tablets are white to off-white convex tablets.


Allergic reaction: symptoms include skin rash and |itching, swelling offace, lips, tongue orthroat, difficulty swallowing ofbreathing.

Other side effects include feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting), diarrhoea, stomach cramps, occasionally back ache, flushing or redness of the skin, headache, increased urine production.

|These tablets may also cause anaemia (a blood disorder) in patients who have a glucose-6-|phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

5. STORING ASCORBIC ACID TABLETS


|Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

|Store in a cool dry place and protect from light. Do not use Ascorbic Acid Tablets after the expiry hate stated on the pack. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
