1. What Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets are and what they are used for
The active ingredients in this medicine are calcium lactate pentahydrate, calcium phosphate and ergocalciferol (vitamin D); they act as supplements of calcium and vitamin D. This medicine is used to treat a deficiency in the body of calcium and vitamin D.
2. Before you take Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets
Do not take these tablets if you:
• are allergic to Calcium and Ergocalciferol or any of the ingredients (see section 6)
• have high levels of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia)
• have high levels of calcium in your urine (hypercalciuria)
• have kidney stones (renal calculi) or if your kidneys do not work properly
• have a condition called sarcoidosis where lumps form in the body
• have an underactive thyroid gland
Check with your doctor before taking these tablets if you:
• are pregnant or breast feeding
• are elderly
• are dehydrated (your body is short of water or the salts in your body are out of balance)
• have diarrhoea
• absorb food poorly from your intestine.
Taking other medicines
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking these tablets if you are taking other medicines, including any that you can buy without a prescription. This is especially important if you are taking:
• calcitonin or disodium etidronate used in the treatment of bone diseases including osteoporosis or Paget's disease and in some cancers
• anticonvulsant medicines used to treat epilepsy or fits such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, sodium valproate, lamotrigine
• oestrogens (often used in hormone replacement therapy/HRT or the contraceptive pill)
• thiazide diuretics (water tablets) eg. bendroflumethiazide, chlortalidone
• tetracycline antibiotics eg. oxytetracycline, minocycline
• other medicines or supplements that contain calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D or iron
• other medicines or supplements that contain potassium and sodium phosphates, sodium fluoride, oxalates or phytates
• cellulose sodium phosphate (for kidney stones).
Other special warnings
Alcohol:
Avoid excessive alcohol while taking this medicine - it can reduce the amount of calcium your body absorbs. Large amounts of fibre, caffeine or nicotine can have the same effect.
Pregnancy and breast feeding:
Check with your doctor before taking this medicine. These tablets must only be taken during pregnancy on your doctor's instructions. Do not take these tablets if you are breast feeding.
Important information about some of the ingredients of this medicine:
Contains lactose and sucrose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
Effects on driving or operating machinery:
This medicine should not affect your ability to perform skilled tasks such as driving or operating machinery. However, if you think you are affected do not drive or operate machinery.
3. How to take Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets
The tablets may be crushed or chewed before swallowing.
Adults & Children:
Adults with normal deficiency - take 1 tablet daily.
Adults with severe deficiency and children - take as directed by your doctor.
If this medicine has been prescribed for you by your doctor the pharmacist's label will tell you how many tablets to take and how often. If you are not sure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to take a dose:
If you miss a dose of this medicine, do not worry, just carry on as usual the next day. DO NOT take a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose.
If you have taken too many tablets:
If you think you have taken too many tablets, contact your doctor straight away or go to the nearest hospital casualty department. Take with you any remaining tablets and the pack so that the medicine can be identified.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Calcium and Ergocalciferol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects are more likely if large doses are taken, if this medicine is taken for a long period of time or if your kidneys do not work properly.
The following side effects can occur due to unusually high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcaemia):
• constipation
• drowsiness
• headache
• loss of appetite
• unusually dry mouth
• tiredness or weakness.
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme at: www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets
Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original package in order to protect from light and moisture.
Do not take the tablets if the expiry date on the pack has passed. If you have any medicines that are out of date, return them to your pharmacist for safe disposal. Do not take the tablets if you notice any signs of deterioration such as chipped or broken or discoloured tablets.

Each tablet contains the active ingredients calcium lactate pentahydrate 300mg, calcium phosphate 150mg and ergocalciferol 10 micrograms (400 units). The active ingredient ergocalciferol preparation also contains butylated hydroxytoluene, sucrose, gelatin, medium chain triglycerides, modified maize starch and sodium aluminium silicate. The other ingredients are maize starch, lactose, talc, magnesium stearate.
What the medicine looks like:
Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets are white, round tablets, engraved with the company logo on one side and A021 on the other side.
This medicine is available in pack sizes of 28, 30, 42, 50, 56, 60, 84, 90, 100, 112, 250, 500 and 1000 tablets. Not all the pack sizes are marketed.
