Doxazosin Tablets 1mg, 2mg and 4mg.

What is your medicine made?
The tablets are white and come in three strengths: 1mg (round) tablets, 2mg oblong tablets, 4mg oblong tablets. Each tablets contains doxazosin mesylate.
The Inactive ingredients in the tablet are: Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycollate (Type A), sodium laurysulphate, magnesium stearate.
Doxazosin Tablets 1mg come in packs of 28 tablets.

What type of medicine are Doxazosin Tablets?
Doxazosin is one of a group of medicine called alpha-blockers. It is used to treat high blood pressure.
What is your medicine for?
Doxazosin Tablets are taken to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), they works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood passes through them more easily, and helps to lower blood pressure.
Before you take Doxazosin Tablets
- Have you had an allergic reaction to Doxazosin Tablets in the past?
This may have been itching, reddening of skin or difficulty in breathing.
- Are you breast feeding?
- Are you aged under 16 years of age?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, tell your doctor immediately as the tablets may not be suitable for you.
- If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant tell your doctor before you start taking your tablets.
- If you have liver disease tell your doctor before you start taking your tablets.
- If you are taking other medicines tell your doctor before you start taking your tablets.
- Take care if you drive or operate machinery safely, particularly when you first start to take them.
How to take your medicine
Normally you will start this therapy with 1mg doxazosin once daily. Depending on the individual patient’s blood pressure response, dosage may, after 1-2 weeks, be increased to 2mg of doxazosin once daily. If necessary, then to 4mg of doxazosin once daily, and eventually to 8mg of doxazosin daily.
Average daily dose for maintenance therapy: 2-4 mg of doxazosin once daily. Maximum dose: 16 mg of doxazosin.
- The tablets should be taken with water in the morning. Your doctor will decide upon the duration of treatment.
Use in the elderly people in patients with renal insufficiency
As the pharmacokinetics of doxazosin are unchanged in the elderly and in patient's with renal insufficiency, such patients can be treated with the usual dose.
- Take your tablet as your doctor told you as written on the label on the pack.
- Continue to take your tablet each day following the days and arrows on the pack.
- If you are still not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- It is important to keep taking your tablets. They help to control your blood pressure.
- Don't change the dose or stop taking the tablets without first checking with your doctor.
- Don't wait until your tablets are finished before seeing your doctor.
What if you take too many tablets?
If you miss a dose take it when you remember, however if it is near the time to take your next dose leave it until your normal time. Do not take more than one dose at a time.
If you take more than your dose accidentally tell your doctor immediately or go to your nearest hospital casualty department taking the packet with you.
Doxazosin Tablets may cause undesirable effects?
- Your tablets, like most medicines may cause undesirable effects.
Problems that Doxazosin Tablets may cause are:
- loss of consciousness especially on getting up from a sitting or lying position.
- dizziness
- headache
- tiredness/sleepiness
- apathy
- weakness
- muscle cramps
- chest pain
- rapid beating of the heart
- shortness of breathe
- constipation
- delayed ejaculation
- frequent and increased need to urinate
- swelling of feet or lower legs (oedema)
- indigestion
- nausea
- nasal stiffiness and/or runny nose (rhinitis)
- blurred vision
Patients on sodium -low diets or treated with diuretics seem more sensitive for the potential for postural effects.
Because of its vasodilator effect. Doxizosin should be administered with caution in the following cardiac emergencies:
- pulmonary oedema caused by aortic or mitral stenosis
- high output cardiac insufficiency
- right ventricular heart failure caused by pulmonary embolism or pericardial effusion
- left ventricular heart failure with low filling pressure
In addition a number of less common and rare effects have been reported in patients being treated with Doxazosin Tablets.
Less common side effects include:
- facial redness
- fever/ shivering
- paleness
- lapse of consciousness (syncope)
- facial/ general swelling (oedema)
- irregular heartbeat
- tremor
- muscle stiffness
- increase appetite or loss of appetite
- hair loss (aloprecia)
- nose bleeds (aloprecia)
- sore throat (pharyngitis)
- coughing (bronchospasms)
- thirst
- blood potassium deficiency (hypokalaemia)
- gout
- muscle pains or weakness
- swelling joints
- nightmares
- memory loss
- painful urination
- abdominal tear flow
- sensitivity of light (photophobia)
- ringing in the ears (tinitus)
- disturbed sense of taste
The following effects have been reported rarely:
- depression
- agitation
- voice box swelling
- skin rash
- itching
- stomach pains
- diarrhoea
- vomiting
- jaundice (icterus)
- increased liver enzymes
- hypoglycaemia
- impotence
- painful persistence erection (priapism)
- confusion
- decreased body temperature in the elderly
Most undesirable effects are usually mild and tend to wear off as treatment goes on. It is important to tell your doctor if any unwanted effects can cause you concern including those which may not be listed above.
The following events have been reported in patients with high blood pressure being treated with Doxazosin Tablets, e.g. chest pain, a feeling of increased heart beat or stoke.
But these may not be due to the medicine contact your doctor immediately if any of these occur.
This medicine has been prescribed by your doctor for you only. Do not give this medicine to anyone else. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
Do not take this medicine after the expiry date stamped on the packet your medicine.
How to store your medicine
Do not store above 30°C.
