2. Before you use this

medicine

Important information about Electrolade

•    This medicine is used to replace essential body salts and water lost due to diarrhoea and dehydration.

•    It can be taken by all the family.

Talk to your doctor....

•    As soon as possible if a child under 2 years has severe diarrhoea and/or sickness.

•    If you still have symptoms after 2 days or if you get frequent symptoms. See section 2.

•    Dissolve the powder in water carefully, according to the instructions. See section 3.

•    Do not keep the solution for more than 24 hours. See section 5.

1. What the medicine is for

Electrolade sachets contain powder to dissolve in water. The solution replaces essential body salts and water lost due to diarrhoea and dehydration.



Do not use the medicine if you or your child have..

   Severe or persistent diarrhoea and sickness.

If this applies, you should seek immediate attention from a doctor or hospital without delay.

•    An allergy to any of the ingredients listed in section 6.

•    Kidney problems.

•    An inability to pass urine or you produce only small amounts of urine.

   A blocked intestine (gut).

•    Or are unable to drink or retain fluids.

If these apply you should only use Electrolade on the doctor’s advice.

A Talk to your doctor if you or your child have..

• Symptoms which carry on for more than 2 days.

Infants under 2 years with severe diarrhoea and/or sickness should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Pregnant or breastfeeding..

You can take Electrolade solution when pregnant or breastfeeding if the doctor has told you to do so. Talk to your doctor first before using Electrolade.

If you are also being sick, Electrolade solution is best sipped a little at a time but frequently.


Important things you need to know first.....

•    Do not add extra sugar or salt to the Electrolade solution.

•    Do not make the solution with too little water as this may lead to abnormally high levels of sodium in the blood.

•    Do not use too much water as you may not replace the salts adequately.

•    If you are diabetic, you should take account of the sugar in this medicine.

Preparing the solution

For infants under 2 years:

•    Add the contents of one sachet to 200ml of freshly boiled and cooled drinking water. Stir to dissolve.

•    Do not reheat this solution.

For adults and children over 2 years:

•    Add the contents of one sachet to 200ml of fresh, cool drinking water. Stir to dissolve.

Dosage

Infants under 2 years

•    Stop all feeds except breastfeeding for 24 hours.

•    Give the baby Electrolade solution at 1 to 11/2 times the volume of normal feed.

•    If you are breastfeeding, you should give the Electrolade solution before the feed.

•    Normal feeding should only be re-introduced when the symptoms are improving.

•    Re-start normal feeds gradually to make up the total daily fluid requirement.

Children over 2 years:

•    Drink 200ml (one sachet) of Electrolade solution after each loose bowel movement.

•Up to 12 sachets may be used in 24 hours.

•    Avoid eating solids for the first day and drink Electrolade solution when thirsty.

•    Gradually start eating solids during day 2.

Adults

•    Drink 200 to 400ml (one to two sachets) of Electrolade solution after each loose bowel movement.

•Up to 16 sachets may be used in 24 hours.

•    Avoid eating solids for the first day and drink Electrolade solution when thirsty.

•    Gradually start eating solids during day 2.

If your symptoms worsen or have not improved after 24 to 48 hours, you should ask your doctor for advice.

A If you take too many

If you accidentally take too many sachets, see a doctor straight away. Take the pack with you to show which medicine you have swallowed.


4.    Possible side effects

There are no known side effects from using this

medicine when used as directed. If you notice

any side effects, stop using this medicine and

tell your doctor or pharmacist.

5.    Storing this medicine

•    Throw away any unused solution or cover it and keep it in the fridge for not more than 24 hours.

•    Do not store the sachets above 25°C.

•    Protect the sachets from moisture.

•    Keep it out of the reach and sight of children.

•    Do not use after the expiry date shown on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

•    Medicine should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of any unused medicine. These measures will help to protect the environment.

sodium chloride 0.236g; potassium chloride 0.3g; sodium bicarbonate 0.5g; dextrose anhydrous 4g.

The other ingredients are:

sodium saccharin, flavour.

When made as directed, Electrolade solution contains in mmol/litre: glucose 111, sodium 50, chloride 40 bicarbonate 30 and potassium 20.

What the medicine looks like

Electrolade sachets contain white powder which dissolves in water to produce a clear colourless solution. Banana, blackcurrant, orange and lemon & lime flavours are available.

They are supplied in packs of 6 or 20 sachets.
