This medicine is available without prescription to treat minor conditions. However, you still need to take it carefully to get the best results from it.

What this medicine is for

This medicine is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the symptomatic relief of minor skin conditions such as spots, pimples, blemishes, mild acne and mild eczema, based on traditional use only. This extract contains extracts of Burdock root and Blue Flag rhizome which are the active ingredients.

Before you take this medicine

This medicine can be taken by adults, the elderly and children aged 12 years and over. However, some people should not take this medicine or should seek the advice of their pharmacist or doctor first.

*Do not take:

   If you are allergic to any of the ingredients or to plants of the Asteraceae (Compositae) family e.g. daisies, marigolds, or artichokes (see ‘What is in this medicine’)

   If you have an intolerance to some sugars, unless your doctor tells you to (this medicine contains sucrose)

•    If you have infected spots or inflamed spots which are infected

   If you are pregnant or breastfeeding !Talk to your pharmacist or doctor:

As soon as possible and do not take this product if you have widespread redness, oozing or infected skin sores, infected spots, inflamed spots that are infected, if your skin is broken or if the affected area suddenly becomes inflamed since if not treated adequately, acne can cause scarring

•    If you are taking any other medicines, including medicines prescribed by your doctor and any medicine you have bought for yourself, including herbal and homeopathic remedies

V How to take this medicine

Check the foil is not broken before use. If it is, do not take that tablet.

Adults, the elderly and children of 12 years and over

Two or three times a day

Swallow the tablet with water. For oral use only.

Do not give to children under 12 years.

Do not take more than the amount recommended in the table.

If symptoms worsen, or do not go away within two weeks, talk to your doctor.

! If you take too many tablets: Talk to a doctor straight away. Take your medicine and this leaflet with you.

! If you forget to take Boots Acne Relief: Take your usual dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. It does not matter if you have missed a dose, just take the next dose at the right time.

Possible side effects

Most people will not have problems, but some may get some of these:

Anaphylactic shock (serious allergic reaction which causes difficulty in breathing or dizziness) has been reported with Burdock root, and Blue Flag root may cause nausea, vomiting and irritation of mucous membranes. The frequency is not known. There have been no reported cases of anaphylactic shock caused by this medicine.

If any side effect becomes severe, or you notice any side effect not listed here, please tell your pharmacist or doctor.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card scheme at: www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

How to store this medicine

Store in the original package and keep the blister in the outer carton. Keep this medicine in a safe place out of the sight and reach of children, preferably in a locked cupboard. Use by the date on the end flap of the carton.

What is in this medicine

Each coated tablet contains 34mg of extract (as dry extract) of Burdock root (Arctium Lappa L.) (equivalent to 90-180mg of Burdock root) Extraction solvent: water, 30mg of extract (as dry extract) from Blue Flag Iris rhizome (Iris versicolor L.) (equivalent to 60-105mg of Blue Flag Iris rhizome) Extraction solvent: water.

Each tablet also contains 191mg of sucrose.

As well as the active ingredients, the tablets also contain Sucrose, Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate, Croscarmellose Sodium, Magnesium Stearate, Purified Talc, Colloidal Hydrated Silica. The tablet coating contains Sucrose, Calcium carbonate, Purified Talc, Mastercote cream FP9002 (containing beeswax, shellac, carnauba wax), Acacia, Titanium dioxide (E171), Shellac

Boots Acne Relief are deep convex white tablets. The tablets are available in blister strips.

This product is available in blister strips: 30, 40, 45, 50, 60, 80 and 100 pack sizes. Not all pack sizes may be marketed.

Additional Information

Burdock is recognised for its hooked burrs and is mainly found in Hungary and Poland.

Blue Flag is common in swamps and low grounds throughout eastern and central North America, in loamy or peaty soils.

Although it is not native of Europe, it can be sourced from southern parts of the continent.
