1.    WHAT THIS PRODUCT IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Napiers Warming Cold and Flu Elixir is a traditional herbal medicinal product containing extracts of Capsicum fruit, Ginger rhizome and Oak bark. For full details see Section 6.

Napiers Warming Cold and Flu Elixir is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the symptomatic relief of colds, sore throats, chills and flu-type symptoms, based on traditional use only.

2.    BEFORE YOU TAKE THIS PRODUCT

Do not take this product if you:

•    are under 12 years old or elderly

•    are pregnant or breastfeeding

•    are allergic to any of the ingredients

•    if you are taking medicines known to interact with alcohol e.g. metronidazole

•    have peptic or duodenal ulcer

•    have obstruction of the bile duct, cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct) or gall stones.

The product should be discontinued at least 2 weeks prior to planned surgery | due to the possible increased risk of bleeding and it may affect other medicines used during surgery


Important information about some of the ingredients in this medicine

This medicinal product contains 10.5 % v/v ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 420 mg per dose, equivalent to 10.5 ml beer,

4.37 ml wine per dose. Harmful for people suffering from alcoholism or liver-disease. If you are in a high risk group (patients with liver disease or epilepsy) you should consider the alcohol content before taking this product.

This product contains approx. 0.1 g of sucrose per 5 ml dose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.

Taking other medicines:

Ginger may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with drugs that affect:

-    coagulation and bleeding e.g. aspirin, anticoagulants such as warfarin, phenprocoumon, heparin,

-    antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and

-    non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.

Oak preparations may affect the absorption of other medicines. Therefore this product should be taken an hour before or after any other medicines.

Tell your doctor before this medicine if you are taking any other medicines, including any bought with a prescription.

Driving and using machines:

In some cases patients have experienced drowsiness while taking ginger. Affected patients should not drive or operate machines._


3. HOW TO TAKE THIS PRODUCT

For oral use only.

Adults and the elderly: One or two 5

ml teaspoonfuls in a glass of hot water or milk, every two hours when required. Maximum daily dose: 12 doses (120 mls).

Children and adolescents over 12 years of age: One 5 ml teaspoonful in warm water every three hours if required. Maximum daily dose: 8 doses (40 mls).

Do not take this product for more than 7 days.

Do not exceed the stated dose.

The product should be taken 1 hour or more before or after intake of other medicinal products.

If your symptoms worsen or persist for more than 7 days d or if you have difficulty breathing, fever or blood in your saliva during the use of this medicinal product, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner.

If you take too much (overdose).

If you take more than the recommended dose, speak to a doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner and take this leaflet with you.

An overdose of this product may result in alcohol intoxication: the amount of alcohol in a full bottle (8.4 g in 100 ml; 12.6 gin 150 ml: equivalent to 0.35 or


0.525 large glasses of wine respectively or 0.84 or 1.26 glasses of beer, respectively) may result in intoxication and should be treated accordingly (See Section 2).

If you forget to take this product

Continue to take your usual dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose. It does not matter if you miss a dose.

If you have any questions, or are unsure of anything, please speak to your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner.

4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Minor gastrointestinal complaints, particularly stomach upset, burping, wind, feeling full and nausea have been reported with Ginger.

Drowsiness has also been reported. Allergic reactions have been reported with Oak bark preparations. The frequency is not known.

If other adverse reactions occur, a doctor or a qualified health care practitioner should be consulted.

5.    HOW TO STORE THIS PRODUCT

Do not use this product after the expiry date. The expiry date is printed on the label and on the bottom of the carton.

Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original container.

There are no special precautions for disposal.

Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Each 5 ml contains:

0.033 ml extract (as liquid extract) from Capsicum fruit (Capsicum frutescens L.) (1:3) Extraction solvent Ethanol 60% v.v

0.032 ml extract (as liquid extract) from Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) (1:2) Extraction solvent Ethanol 90% v/v

0.25 ml of extract (as liquid extract) from Oak Bark (Quercus robur L.)

(1:1) Extraction solvent: Ethanol 21 % v/v

Also contains Ethanol, Cassia oil, Clove oil, Pimento oil, glycerol, caramel E150, Water.

Ginger is best known as a culinary spice, native to Asia and now grown worldwide. An extract from the spicy root is used in this medicine.

What is Oak bark?

Also called the 'English Oak', this species of oak tree is native to Britain and Europe. An extract from the sustainably harvested bark is used in this medicine.
