1. WHAT LAXIDO PAEDIATRIC PLAIN IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Laxido Paediatric Plain contains macrogol 3350 and the electrolytes sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate and potassium chloride.
Laxido Paediatric Plain is a laxative used for the treatment of chronic constipation in children aged 2 to 11 years. It is also used to treat a build up of hard faeces in the bowel in children aged 5 to 11 years, which may be a result of long-term constipation (this is known as faecal impaction). Macrogol 3350 makes your child's faeces softer and easier to pass, giving them relief from constipation. The electrolytes help to maintain the body's normal levels of sodium, potassium and water while your child is being treated for constipation.
2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GIVE LAXIDO PAEDIATRIC PLAIN
Do not give Laxido Paediatric Plain if your doctor has told you that your child:
- is allergic (hypersensitive) to macrogol 3350, sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate or potassium chloride
- has a perforation in the wall of their intestine
- has a blockage in their intestine
- has paralysis of the intestine (for example, your child's intestines may stop working due to intestinal surgery or severe infection)
- has ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or toxic megacolon.
If any of these applies to your child, please talk to their doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
Warnings and precautions
Before giving Laxido Paediatric Plain to your child for faecal impaction, it should be confirmed by their doctor that your child has this condition.
If your child has a heart or kidney problem, an impaired gag reflex, reflux oesophagitis (heartburn caused by back-flow of stomach contents in the oesophagus) or reduced consciousness, you should talk to their doctor before giving Laxido Paediatric Plain.

Please tell their doctor, pharmacist or nurse if your child is taking, has recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. When taking large volumes of Laxido Paediatric Plain (e.g. for faecal impaction), your child should not take other medicines within one hour of taking Laxido Paediatric Plain.

3. HOW TO GIVE LAXIDO PAEDIATRIC PLAIN
Always give Laxido Paediatric Plain exactly as the doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with the doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Laxido Paediatric Plain should be taken orally.
Chronic constipation
The usual dose for chronic constipation depends on the age of the child and their response to treatment.
- As a starting dose, children aged 2 to 6 years should be given 1 sachet each day and children aged 7 to 11 years should be given 2 sachets each day.
- The doctor may tell you to increase the number of sachets taken until your child has a soft bowel movement.
- If the dose does need increasing, this should be done every other day. Normally, no more than 4 sachets are required to be taken in one day.
This course of treatment for chronic constipation needs to be for a prolonged period of time, at least 6 to 12 months.
It is not necessary to take all of the drink at one time, if the child prefers it, half the drink can be taken in the morning and half in the evening.

The daily number of sachets should be taken in divided doses, all taken within 12 hours (e.g. 8am to 8pm). Treatment can be stopped when the medicine has worked. This is shown by your child passing large volumes of stool and/or watery diarrhoea. This course of treatment for faecal impaction can be for up to 7 days.
How to mix
Laxido Paediatric Plain should be made up by dissolving the contents of one sachet in a quarter glass of water (62.5 ml). Stir well until all the powder has dissolved and the Laxido Paediatric Plain solution is clear or slightly hazy, then give it to your child to drink. If you like you can add a flavour such as orange squash to the drink. If your child is taking Laxido Paediatric Plain for faecal impaction it may be easier to dissolve 12 sachets in 750 ml of water. In this case, the reconstituted solution must be stored in accordance with the relevant instructions provided in section 5.
If your child takes more Laxido Paediatric Plain than they should
Your child may experience severe pains and swelling in their abdomen, or vomiting or diarrhoea. If this happens, contact their doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to give Laxido Paediatric Plain
If you forget to give your child a dose, give it as soon as you remember and then continue on as before. Do not give a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
If you stop giving Laxido Paediatric Plain
To get the most benefit from Laxido Paediatric Plain, always make sure that your child finishes the course of treatment recommended by their doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This will make sure that your child's constipation is cleared, otherwise the symptoms they are suffering from may persist.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask the doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
