Magnesium Trisilicate Compound Tablets BP

(magnesium trisilicate and hydrated aluminium oxide)

1. What these tablets are and what they are used for

These tablets contain two active ingredients, magnesium trisilicate and hydrated aluminium oxide. These are antacids which work by neutralising acid in yourstomach.

These tablets are used to treat dyspepsia (heartburn or indigestion) and reflux.They can also help to heal duodenal ulcers.

2. Before you take these tablets

Do not take these tablets if:

• You know you are allergic to magnesium trisilicate

or aluminium oxide or to any of the other ingredients (these are listed in section 6)

•    You suffer from acute porphyria

•    You have a blood condition called hypophosphataemia (low concentration of phosphate in the blood).

You must be especially careful if:

•    You have kidney problems

•    You are pregnant or breastfeeding

•    You have an intolerance to some sugars.

These tablets contain lactose and sucrose.

Discuss your treatment with your doctor before taking

this medicine if any of the above applies to you. Taking other medicines

These tablets can affect some other medicines you may be taking, and they should not be taken at the same time of day as other medicines.

Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking.This means

medicines you have bought yourself as well as those you have on prescription from your doctor and particularly any of the following:

•    quinidine (for an irregular or fast heartbeat)

•    ACE inhibitors (for high blood pressure)

•    salicylates e.g.aspirin

•    atazanavir or tipranavir (for HIV infection)

•    azithromycin, isoniazid, itraconazole, ketoconazole, methenamine, nitrofurantoin, rifampicin, tetracyclines, cephalosporins or fluoroquinolones (to treat infections)

•    lithium,sulpiride or phenothiazines (for depression

or mental illness)

•    barbiturates (sedatives)

•    bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis)

•    proguanil (to prevent malaria),chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine (to prevent malaria or treat rheumatoid arthritis or lupus (SLE))

•    deflazacort (a corticosteroid to treat allergic or inflammatory conditions)

•    mycophenolate (to prevent organ rejection)

•    penicillamine (for rheumatoid arthritis)

•    digoxin (for heart failure or an irregular heart beat)

•    dipyridamole (to prevent blood clots)

•    eltrombopag (to treat a blood disorder)

•    erlotinib (to treat some types of cancer)

•    fexofenadine (an antihistamine)

•    gabapentin or phenytoin (to treat epilepsy or nerve pain)

•    lansoprazole (to treat ulcers)

•    levothyroxine (to treat a thyroid problem)

•    rosuvastatin (for high cholesterol)

•    ulipristal (an emergency contraception)

•    sodium or calcium polystyrene sulfonate (to treat high levels of potassium in the blood)

•    iron preparations (to treat or prevent anaemia)

•    bile acids.

Driving and using machinery

These tablets should not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

3. How to take these tablets

Suck or chew before swallowing.

If this medicine has been given to you by your doctor, he/she will decide what dose you need to take and the dose will be on the pharmacist's label.Carry on taking them for as long as you have been told unless you have any problems.In that case, check with your doctor.

The usual doses are as follows:

Adults:

Suck or chew one or two tablets when required, usually between meals and at bedtime.Do not take at the same time as other medicines.

Do not take more than the dose stated above.

If you continue to have the same symptoms, or if you find that you need to take the tablets frequently, go and see your doctor.

Children should not take these tablets.

If you take more tablets than you should:

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist straight away.

4. Possible side effects

Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets are suitable for most people if they are taken at the recommended dose, but, like all medicines they can sometimes cause side effects,although not everybody gets them. Diarrhoea and belching have been reported.

Taken excessively over a long time this medicine may cause kidney stones.

Patients who have had stomach bypass operations or those who have kidney problems may experience hypermagnesaemia (an abnormally high level of magnesium in the blood).This can lead to muscle weakness, low blood pressure,changes in heart beat,

drowsiness or confusion.In severe cases it may be very difficult to breathe and the heart rate may slow.

5. How to store these tablets

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not store above 25°C..Store in the original container.

Do not use the tablets after the expiry date shown on the label.

Take any unused medicine back to your pharmacist to be destroyed.
