3. HOW TO TAKE RANITIDINE TABLETS
The name of your medicine is Ranitidine Tablets.
It contains the active ingredient Ranitidine Hydrochloride.
Ranitidine belongs to a group of medicines called H2 - antagonists. It works by preventing your stomach from producing too much acid.
Ranitidine tablets are used to:
• Treat and prevent ulcers in your stomach and the first part of your small intestine.
• Prevent acid coming up your throat.
• Prevent your stomach from producing too much acid which could cause pain and discomfort, such as heartburn, indigestion or dyspepsia.
• Prevent acid coming up from the stomach during childbirth.
• Prevent ulcers caused by stress.
• Prevent bleeding from ulcers.
You should ask your doctor if you are unsure why
you have been given Ranitidine Tablets.
Do not take Ranitidine Tablets if you have an allergy to Ranitidine, or any of the other ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
You must tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:
• have kidney disease.
• have the rare condition called porphyria (genetic abnormality of metabolism causing abdominal pains and mental confusion).
• have recurrent dyspepsia (pain and discomfort in the upper part of your stomach) and have not yet seen your doctor about these symptoms.
• are using drugs to treat pain and inflammation (e.g. Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen).
• are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
• are breast-feeding or intend to breast-feed.
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Driving and using machines
Ranitidine Tablets may cause side effects such as dizziness, involuntary movement, confusion and hallucinations. If you experience these symptoms. do not drive or use any tools or machinery.
Make sure you take the tablets as directed by your doctor. The label will tell you what to do if you cannot remember. If you are not sure of anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Adults (including the elderly) and adolescents (12 years and over):
• 150 mg in the morning and 150 mg in the evening, or
• 300 mg at bedtime.
Your exact dose will depend on your particular stomach condition, your doctor will tell you the dose you should take.
Children (from 3 to 11 years and over 30 kg weight):
Your doctor will work out the right dose for you based on your child's weight.
Gastrooesophageal reflux disease
The usual starting dose is 150mg twice a day taken in the morning and the evening, or 300mg as a single dose at bed time, for eight to twelve weeks as necessary.
High gastric acid secretion (e.g. Zollinger-EIIison syndrome)
The usual starting dose for adults is 150mg three times a day. However, it may be necessary to increase the dose up to 6 g Ranitidine per day.
Duodenal and Gastric Ulcers
The usual starting dose is 150mg twice daily in the morning and evening, or 300mg as a single dose at bed time.
Normal duration of treatment is 4 weeks, but this may be continued for a further four weeks if required.
Acid Aspiration syndrome
Usual starting dose of 150mg given the night before and 2 hours before administration of general anaesthesia For patients in labour, an initial dose of 150mg at the start of labour may be followed by doses of 150mg every 6 hours maybe used.

Prevention of gastro-intestinal bleeding due to stress ulcers in seriously ill patients
Usual starting dose is 150mg Ranitidine twice daily.
It is important to take the tablets at the right times; swallow the tablets whole with a little water. Always take Ranitidine Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are still not sure.
If you take more Ranitidine Tablets than you should
Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of taking too many tablets or an overdose, even if you feel well.
If you forget to take Ranitidine Tablets
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as you would normally. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop taking Ranitidine Tablets
Do not stop taking Ranitidine Tablets unless your doctor tells you to. You should finish all the tablets your doctor has prescribed. It can be dangerous to stop taking the medicine without your doctor's advice. If you have any further questions on how to take Ranitidine Tablets, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, Ranitidine Tablets can cause
side effects, although not everybody gets them.
• You must stop taking the tablets and tell your doctor immediately, if your chest suddenly feels tight and you start to wheeze or get a skin rash or swelling of the face, lips throat and eyelids.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any
of these side effects are noticed:
Rare (occur in less than 1 in 1000 but more than 1
in 10,000 patients):
• Itchy skin rash.
• Fever.
• Feeling faint on standing up quickly(low blood pressure).
• Difficulty breathing or wheeziness.
• Swelling of the skin and mucous membranes e.g lips and eyelids.
• Headaches and dizziness.
Very Rare (occur in less than 1 in 10,000 patients):
• Severe headache.
• Dizziness.
• Confusion.
• Hallucination and depression.
• Faster or slower irregular heartbeat.
• Changes in the way blood is made up making you feel unusually tired, out of breath or catch germs more easily.
• Skin rashes.
• Joint pain and muscle pain.
• Nausea.
• Loss of appetite with or without jaundice (yellow colouring of skin or eyes).
• Diarrhoea.
• Severe stomach pan rarely caused by acute pancreatitis.
Enlarged breasts in men. Impotence.
Problems with your sight. Hair loss.
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, talk to you doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not take Ranitidine Tablets after the expiry date (EXP) printed on the pack. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
If you have any Ranitidine Tablets left, return them to your pharmacist.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
What Ranitidine Tablets contain
Each 150mg Tablet contains 150mg of the active ingredient Ranitidine as Ranitidine hydrochloride. The other ingredients are Microcrystalline Cellulose, Polyvidone, Magnesium Stearate, Methylhydroxypropylcellulose, Titanium dioxide (E171), Talc, Macrogol 6000 and Methacrylic acid copolymer.
Each 300mg Tablet contains 300mg of the active ingredient Ranitidine as Ranitidine hydrochloride. The other ingredients are Microcrystalline Cellulose, Pollyvidone, Magnesium Stearate, Methylhydroxy- propylcellulose, Titanium dioxide (E171), Talc, Macrogol 6000 and Methacrylic acid copolymer.
Ranitidine 150mg Tablets are white to off white, round coated tablet. Available in blister packs of 60 tablets.
Ranitidine 300mg Tablets are white to off white, oblong coated tablet. Available in blister packs of 30 tablets.
