Ringer’s solution

1. WHAT RINGER’S SOLUTION IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Ringer's solution is a clear solution of sodium chloride, potassium chloride and calcium chloride in water.

Ringer's solution is given by Intravenous Infusion (into a vein) to patients suffering from water loss and lack of sodium or low potassium levels.

2. BEFORE YOU ARE GIVEN RINGER'S SOLUTION

You should not receive Ringer's solution if you have:

•    very high sodium or potassium levels.

•    kidney or heart disorders.

Your doctor will check these.

Your doctor or nurse will ensure the solution is clear and free from particles before use.

Taking other medicines

Please, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed.

The following drugs should not be mixed with Ringer's solution:

•    amikacin, benzylpenicillin, tetracyclines (antibiotics)

•    amphotericin B (anti fungal)

•    dobutamine, amiodarone (heart medication)

•    amsacrine (cancer medication)

•    chlopheniramine maleate (antihistamine and antidepressant)

•    sodium nitroprusside (high blood pressure medication)

•    phosphates

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

The use of Ringer's solution is not thought to be a risk in pregnancy or breast-feeding

Driving and using machines

Ringer's solution has no effect on driving or using machines.

3. HOW YOU ARE GIVEN RINGER'S SOLUTION

Ringer's solution will be given to you in hospital.

You will receive your medicine by infusion (IV drip). The amount and rate at which the infusion is given depends on your requirements. Your doctor will decide on the correct dose for you to receive. If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Like all medicines Ringer's solution can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following side effects have been reported if the solution is given too quickly:

•    Heart attack

•    Blood circulation problems

Thrombosis (the formation of a clot) may occur in the vein where the infusion is given.

5. HOW RINGER’S SOLUTION IS STORED

Your doctor and hospital pharmacist are responsible for the correct storage, use and disoosal of Ringer's solution.

Ringer's solution should be stored between 2 °C and 25 °C.

The solutions must not be used after the expiry date shown on the label.

Any solution remaining after treatment should be thrown away. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

6. FURTHER INFORMATION

What Ringer's solution contains:

Ringer's solution contains 0.86% sodium chloride, 0.03% potassium chloride and 0.033% calcium chloride dihydrate in water. The solution also contains small amounts of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.

Ringer's Solution is a clear liquid in a sealed plastic container known as Polyfusor® or Kabipac®.

The solutions are available in 500ml and 1000ml volumes.

All pack sizes may not be marketed.
