St James’ ointment
Read all of this leaflet carefully because it contains important information for you.
This medicine is available without prescription. However, you still need to use St James' ointment carefully to get the best results from it.

St James' ointment is a soothing balm used for the relief of minor skin problems.
St James' ointment contains:
• zinc oxide - soothes and protects the skin
• ichthammol and salicylic acid - stop the growth of bacteria on the skin
• urea - helps to keep moisture in the skin.
Do not use St James' ointment if:
• you are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients of St James' ointment (listed in Section 6).
Do not use St James' ointment if the above applies to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicine, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Important information about some of the ingredients of St James’ ointment
St James' ointment contains lanolin (wool fat). If you are allergic to lanolin, do not use St James' ointment.
If this medicine is from your doctor or pharmacist, do exactly as they have told you. Otherwise, follow the instructions below. If you do not understand the instructions, or you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
• This medicine is for your skin only.
• Do not get this medicine in your eyes.
How to apply the product
1. Wash the affected area with soap and water.
2. Dry the area with a clean towel.
3. Apply the ointment on and around the affected area.
4. Wash your hands very well afterwards.
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, St James' ointment can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following side effects may happen with this medicine:
Stop using this medicine if you notice any of the following:
• irritation to the skin
• rash or swelling where you have applied the medicine (contact dermatitis).
If you notice any of the above, stop using this medicine.
If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Reporting of side effects:
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
• Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
• Do not use St James' ointment after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
• Store in the original container in a cool place.
• Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
What St James’ ointment contains
• The active substances are zinc oxide 20% w/w,ichthammol (1 in 3 dilution) 2.8% w/w and salicylic acid 0.1% w/w
• The other ingredients are liquid paraffin, yellow soft paraffin, wool fat, lavender oil and urea.

St James' ointment is an off-white ointment.
The pack contains 37g of ointment.
